I connected with The Homestead 1854 owners Chet and Mary Kay Sergo through Heather Kellogg, who owns local Yellow Aura Yoga in Geneva. Heather has instructed some of the yoga experiences offered at the property, and I couldn’t wait to learn more about this local spot after hearing how well they went. After a great chat on the phone with Mary Kay, we decided to set up a time for my husband Ryan and I to explore their incredible property and meet her and Chet in person.
Ryan and I enjoyed an easy Tuesday evening drive to Plano (located less than 60 miles from downtown Chicago) and were immediately impressed as we pulled up to their property. The main building (built in 1854, if that wasn’t obvious from the name) stands tall and grand and the lush grounds make you feel like you’ve been transported to a true oasis. Mary Kay met us right away with a warm smile and welcomed us to the property with the offer of a cocktail. She didn't have to twist our arm!
We then toured the main building – full of grand chandeliers, rich wood, and period-appropriate room décor. I loved the unique interior layout, detailed architecture, and historic feel. Afterwards, we stepped back outside and casually walked amongst the landscaping to the labyrinth, lawns, timber tent, patios, and fire pits to continue our tour. Along the way we met other members of The Homestead 1854 staff, visiting friends, and even some of the neighbors. We spent almost three hours this way – enjoying the grounds, sipping wine, nibbling meats and cheeses, and indulging in great conversation with everyone onsite. Oh, and snapping the occasional photograph! We felt wonderfully relaxed and at home.
The Homestead 1854, owned by the Sergos since 2012, focuses primarily on all types of special events – weddings, reunions, retirement parties, business retreats, holiday parties, and more! This unique and intimate location can host up to 100 for outdoor events, and approximately 50 people for indoor gatherings. While onsite, guests can enjoy many different areas of the property. Weddings, for example, might start with the ceremony on the carefully landscaped labyrinth, move to a cocktail hour on the front lawn, and then head to the dreamy timber tent for the reception. Vintage seating and place settings, romantic chandeliers and candelabras, and ivy wrapping and twisting around the structures create a scene out of a fairy tale.
After an exquisite culinary experience (there a ton of vendor options!), guests can continue their celebration around the cozy fire pit, or inside the main building before they retire to one of 6 private guest rooms (the building sleeps up to 12).
The Homestead 1854 also regularly hosts private retreats, wine dinners, and yoga events. On select Thursdays throughout the Summer and Fall, you can enjoy a candlelit gentle yoga flow on the labyrinth with wine and appetizers afterwards for just $20. These events are a great way to relax on your own, or bring a friend for a fun night out. Overnight events - featuring yoga, culinary, and adventure experiences all-in-one, and day-long weekday relaxation experiences are also offered. You can visit their website for full list of upcoming events!
Chet and Mary Kay are incredibly creative, and can host almost anything onsite. Recently, they’ve welcomed groups of teachers after their last day of school, small business owners, and corporate teams for customized experiences. If you have an idea, ask them about how they can tailor their offerings to your exact needs!
One thing you don’t want to miss happening this month is their NEW wine, beer, and small bites experience every Wednesday beginning in August! From 3pm-9pm, sip a beverage of your choice and nibble on delicious appetizers in one of the great nooks of the property. You can bring your laptop and finish up some work amongst the greenery, or simply stop by with a friend and indulge in a few hours of conversation.
Ryan and I were sad to leave to this hidden gem at the end of our visit, but we will definitely be back to enjoy a retreat or an event onsite. Do yourself a favor and visit their website for more information. GUYS - this would be a GREAT date night spot for you score extra points at!
