Winter Skin Care
I definitely have a love/hate relationship with seasons! I love living in a part of the country where I can experience the newness of Spring, the warmth of Summer, and the colors of Fall, BUT that means I also have to deal with Winter – the ugly step-sibling of the other seasons. I don’t ski or snowmobile enough to be able to make Winter worth much, so I find it pretty challenging to be stuck in the house. What I also find challenging during winter is my SKIN! Having a humidifier installed with our heating and air helps a bit, but overall my skin becomes super dry and needy! I can’t imagine I’m the only one with this issue, so I’m spotlighting the products that save my skin each winter.

One of the first things I aim to do in Winter is to stay hydrated! You can easily become dehydrated in cooler temps also, so make sure to drink lots and lots of water. This, in turn, will help your skin’s elasticity, hydration, and color. One of my favorite brands is Essentia – it helps you achieve an appropriate pH balance and is BPA, Flouride, and Chlorine FREE! I’ll have to write another post on all the reasons why I hate Flouride…
Next, I make sure to have CLEAN and EXFOLIATED skin! I like to start by washing my face with Alba Botanica Good + Clean Daily Detox Foaming Cleanser. It leaves my skin feeling soft, clean, and totally refreshed! A couple times each week after washing my face I’ll also use Aria Starr Beauty’s Dead Sea Mud Mask. This is a DEEP CLEAN that helps extract impurities and completely exfoliate your skin. I’ll let it sit for 20-30 minutes while I make breakfast, throw in some laundry, or let the dogs out. By the time I get a few morning chores done, it’s time to wash it off. My face seriously feels SO smooth afterwards and my pores appear much smaller.
I want to focus on more than just my face, though! To exfoliate the rest of my skin, I’ll use Shea Moisture Firming Hand + Body Scrub . This sugar scrub is infused with mango butter and green coffee bean extract to help deal with dimpled skin (we all have a few spots) and wash away dead skin. I’ll use it in the shower at least once a week, and on my hands several times throughout the week to keep them silky smooth.
Once a week, I’ll also make time for an Epsom Salt Bath. I love using Dr. Teals Relax + Relief Pure Epsom Salts with Eucalyptus + Spearmint. I fill the tub with warm-to-hot water, dump about 2-3 cups of salt in, and soak for about 40 minutes. During the first 20 minutes your body detoxifies and exfoliates, and during the second 20-minutes your body will begin to absorb the magnesium. Not only is this incredibly relaxing (the magnesium binds to the serotonin in your brain, helping you relax and de-stress), but also helps with muscle soreness, migraines, and cold/flu symptoms! If you’ve never taken an Epsom Salt bath before, start out with 1-2 cups of salt and a shorter period in the water. Stand up slowly as you might feel a little off balance from the detoxification you just experienced. You can increase your time and the amount of salt used as you feel comfortable. As with any form of detoxification, be sure to drink plenty of water during and after!
LASTLY, but definitely not least, I MOISTURIZE from head-to-toe. I don’t typically go full out with my makeup unless I’m headed to an event or having a date night with my husband, so my day-to-day favorite is Cover Girl’s BB Cream Tinted Moisturizer. Not only does it keep my face from looking dry, but it also gives me a touch of color during those gloomy Winter months! For the rest of me, I use Coconut Oil, Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, and sometimes a skin-firming bronzing lotion to stay moisturized.
For my lips, I can’t get enough Burt’s Bees! I hate that chapped feeling, and this is the only lip balm that works well for me. I pretty much keep one on every floor of the house and in my purse for a quick grab! I always buy a multi-pack of these to keep on hand.
